Way back in 2019, when Chevrolet announced the then-redesigned Silverado 2500 and 3500 HD trucks, the heavy haulers were outfitted with everything you would expect as an available upgrade at the time.  Unfortunately, I feel they also came with what I would call a less-than-stellar front fascia and headlight design. That look is getting a change with the 2024 Silverado HD.

I read that the 2023 line of Silverado HD is not getting any substantial upgrades as those are being slated for the 2024 models. And speaking of the 2024 Silverado HD, I did some research and learned Chevrolet is updating the look of the Silverado HD which will — according to some — resemble the light-duty counterparts. But as they say on late-night TV, “but wait, there’s more.”

According to what I learned, while the exterior will be getting a major redesign, Chevrolet decided to focus just as much attention on its interior. For starters, the 2024 Silverado HD adopts a new 13.4-inch central touchscreen which is available with almost every trim level. You will also find a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

I also hear that Chevy also delivers air vents to the rear seat area. And if you need more storage, a new center console with an available wireless phone charger, and up to 10 cupholders is part of the plan. Everything I have read points to the majority of these upgrades applying to LT, LTZ, and High Country Trim levels. I cannot verify what Chevy has planned for the Work Truck, but my guess is, it’s a work truck, so you can probably rely on the previous model’s more basic design and amenities.

The 2024 Silverado HD’s cabin is not at the end of the upgrade list. The truck benefits from new technologies that make driving and towing more enjoyable. The Adaptive Cruise Control is now available on the HD models. Keep in mind, it’s an option that is stacked on the standard forward collision warning, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and a following-distance indicator. What’s more, it even works when a trailer is connected to the truck. To make this great upgrade, Silverado engineers even programmed it to account for the extra weight of the trailer.

Several years ago, GM introduced its “Transparent Trailer” tech, where multiple exterior camera angles create a rearview as though your trailer is “invisible.” This feature is now compatible with both gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers.

When it comes to power, Chevrolet delivers, and the Duramax continues its team-up with an Allison 10-speed for 2024. For you horsepower and torque junkies, the output gets a significant boost. The 6.6-liter engine now makes 470 horsepower (up from 445) and 975 pound-feet of torque (up from 910). I did read that unspecified changes to the engine’s combustion process have been made to the Duramax to make it more efficient than ever before. These combustions updates also help to deliver an additional 25 horsepower and 65 lb-ft of torque.

Finally, the 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD will go on sale in the first half of 2023. To add some icing to the proverbial cake, Chevrolet also announced that the heavy-duty Silverado will be getting a version of the off-road-ready ZR2 model for the first time. Look for a launch date sometime after the regular trucks.
