Factory components will get the job done, but when you start pushing the vehicle to its limits the parts may not cut it anymore. Towing puts a large strain on multiple vehicle components and Turbonetics has a bolt-on replacement for the Ford 6.4-liter Powerstroke that will help combat these issues.
We had the chance to talk with Reggie Wynn from Turbonetics to get some more details on the intercooler. We asked Reggie to explain the difference between the factory intercooler and their replacement, “Our Spearco intercooler uses a bar and plate design versus the factory tube and fin design. Bar and plate allows you to utilize the entire core for cooling.”
Reggie said, “Upgrading the intercooler can help performance while towing. In our tests we have seen the intercooler lower Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) by 150 to 200 degress. The cores are also capable of withstanding pressures in excess of 200 psi.”
Doing modifications in the correct order will help prevent failure and help you get the most out of the parts you are bolting on. “We recommend upgrading the intercooler first and then after you have taken care of the fuel system, moving on to the turbocharger,” Reggie explained to us.
Having a part that bolts on and increases performance is great, but a company that stands behind their product is just as good. Reggie told us, “The intercooler is covered by our one year no fault, no hassle warranty. If you damage it in racing or high boost application the product is still covered.” Whether you are towing or racing and looking for a bolt-on modification to help keep EGT temperatures down it maybe time to replace your factory intercooler.
