Back in December, Cummins announced it had built the 2,000,000th 6-cylinder turbo diesel for Chrysler’s Ram pickup line. Now the company has released a start-to-finish video showing the assembly that engine at the Cummins plant in Columbus, Indiana.

It’s a little humorous to remember that the first 12-valve Ram turbo-diesel was rated at just 160 horsepower with 400 lb-ft peak torque. But back in the late ’80s, that 5.9-liter straight-6 engine was quite the game-changer in the Ram’s unique big-rig-styled cab. Today, the displacement has expanded to 6.7-liter, high-pressure common-rail fuel delivery and 24 valves. Also, the ratings are an astounding 350 horsepower with 800 lb-ft torque. And there’s a number of features on the new engine that weren’t even considered in the beginning, such as B20-fuel compatibility and an SCR system that requires DEF refills.

The 2,000,000 engine never went into service, instead, was relegated to display duties. The Cummins engine is available in Ram heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models, making up about 80 percent of those sales.
